“Will Alberta Health Services Cover The Cost Of My Physio Treatments?”
Some of the most common questions we field in physical therapy are concerning the funding model for assessment and treatment through Alberta Health Care. A number of clinics in the Edmonton area are allotted a monthly and yearly allowance for community rehabilitation. Wait times vary depending on demand, though clients typically are seen within the week for their initial assessment at Corona Station Physical Therapy.
Orthopedic Rehabilitation Physiotherapy
Those clients who have undergone surgery or suffered a fracture are automatically approved for an assessment and 3 - 4 treatments through Alberta Health Care. There are some non-surgical procedures that may fall under this category, so we recommend asking our admin team upon booking. A limited number of additional treatments may be granted for conditions that meet certain criteria.
Albertans who receive a hip replacement or knee replacement have the choice between group classes or 1-on-1 Physiotherapy, although our clinic is only offering 1-on-1 sessions at this time. Hip replacements automatically qualify for an assessment and 3 treatments, with the opportunity for an additional 3 treatments if certain criteria are met. Knee replacements automatically qualify for an assessment and 6 treatments.
Muscle and Joint Physiotherapy
Clients who are on certain government subsidy programs and are considered to be on the low income scale may qualify for an assessment and 3 - 4 for injuries that are not fractures or surgeries. To qualify, clients must go through a telephone assessment with the Rehabilitation Advice Line prior to their in-person Physiotherapy assessment.
Please contact our admin team at 780-424-4804 to see if you qualify for this program.
Other Injuries and Conditions
Physiotherapy for incontinence or neurological conditions may be covered by AHS at limited providers.
Those individuals injured in a motor vehicle accident or at work must access different funding sources for their treatment. Some services, such as vestibular rehabilitation, concussion management and running gait analysis are not covered by the community rehabilitation program and must be paid for privately.
